On Wednesday, August 28, fans of John Green can enjoy a John Green Movie Night, showcasing The Fault in Our Stars. The movie screening will take place at 7 p.m. in the Gonzales Auditorium located in the Liberal Arts Building. Before the screening, there will be a pre-movie social event from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at McCain Library and Archives. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the John Green Exhibit, which includes manuscript materials from popular Green's books such as The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska.
John Green has been a close friend of the de Grummond Collection for many years, with his association with Southern Miss dating back to 2009 when he was invited to participate in the 42nd annual Kay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival as one of the featured authors. During his visit to the campus, Green took the opportunity to explore de Grummond, and due to his deep connections to the South, he chose to contribute manuscript materials for six of his young adult novels. In 2024, Green revisited Southern Miss to deliver the concluding address at the Spring 2024 University Forum, and once again visited de Grummond to admire the numerous acclaimed writings and illustrations that are housed alongside his own work.
Regarded as Green's most acclaimed novel, The Fault in Our Stars made its debut at the number one position on the bestseller list of The New York Times and was selected as TIME Magazine's top fiction book of 2012. The film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars hit theaters in the summer of 2014, featuring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff in the leading roles, under the direction of Josh Boone.
In conjunction with the movie night event, the de Grummond Collection is sponsoring a movie poster and poetry contest. Students can choose to design their own movie poster for one of Green’s books-turned-film, or write a poem inspired by his work. Details for the contest will be announced at the film showing on August 28.
Refreshments will be served at the social, and admission to both events is free for students.
